Conseguem ouvir? Esse jรก me tinha despertado a atenรงรฃo.
Bom, รฉ certo que este cante nรฃo me sai da cabeรงa.
โAt first it seemed to me to be the wind beating against the reeds, or high in the cork oaks, although I imagine the wind must be rare there โ the wind, that is. But now that I listen more carefully, I think I can hear, farther away, the hoes striking the earth, beyond the cante, in the distance. And the beating of hearts โ could that be it? Can you hear it? That had already caught my attention.
I can also hear menโs voices, certainly, together with the hoes striking the earth, and with the hearts that never stop. And now that I listen even more closely, I can distinguish some womenโs voices too, and it is curious that at the same time I seem to hear children playing. These Alentejo landscapes are curious: in our minds they are barren and solitary places, but the life they contain is astonishing, believe me.
The cante has returned, now together with a rhythm that I take to be the rhythm of work. I imagine bodies sweating in the heat, now that I can also โhearโ this intense and constant heat. It is curious that the later it gets, and the heat subsides, the more sounds begin to catch my attention.
By now it is almost night, and I have not even noticed the time passing as I contemplated this wonderful landscape. Well, it is true that I cannot get this cante out of my head. I no longer know whether I am really hearing it or whether it is my imagination. I wish you were here, and if you could see, as I can, you would certainly understand what I mean.
It is almost completely dark in this Alentejo landscape, but if we look carefully, we can see that there is light beneath the door, a sign that someone is inside. It is time to continue the journey, and yes, nightingales sing at night too.โ
