🇬🇧 Corrida à Portuguesa describes a bullfight in a Portuguese manner. A central theme present throughout all piece, is developed in different moments, introduced by the different cornet melodies used in the Portuguese bullfight. The first moment is the entrance of the bullfighter in is horse, and the gallop around the arena to make the land recognition. Once recognized starts the second moment, the entrance of the bull, where we realize the strength of the animal. The following is the bullfight, the central theme unfolds in a “paso doble” allowing us to “see” the spins of horse and bull. Then the cornet announces the moment when men grab the bull. There is a sudden cut in the rhythm, men jump into the arena and cite the bull. Within a crescendo of tension the bull rushes to the men and the “bull grab” is consummated. Finally, the central theme returns, in a dance rhythm, is the lap of honor for bullfighter and men, where they are consecrated. 🇵🇹 Corrida à Portuguesa tal como o nome indica, descreve uma tarde de toiros à maneira portuguesa. Sobre um tema central presente ao longo de toda a peça, desenvolvem-se os diferentes momentos de uma lide à portuguesa, que vão sendo introduzidos pelos diferentes toques usados nas corridas. Começamos por perceber a entrada do cavaleiro, num ritmo rápido, corrido, lembrando o galope à volta da arena num reconhecimento dos terrenos. Depois, reconhecemos o toque para a entrada do toiro, e percebemos a força do animal nos sons graves mas igualmente rápidos – também o toiro faz o reconhecimento dos terrenos, porém num galope que progressivamente será menos veloz, mais pesado. Segue-se a lide – o tema desdobra-se em tempo de “paso doble”, permitindo “ver” os volteios do cavaleiro e do toiro. É então introduzido o momento da pega. Há um corte súbito no ritmo, os forcados saltam para a arena e citam o toiro. Sente-se um crescendo da tensão e de seguida o toiro corre para os forcados e a pega é consumada. Finalmente, retoma-se o tema central num ritmo de dança e de festa – é a volta de honra, consagrando cavaleiro e forcado.
